I love to see the echindas wandering around Mulligans Flat Nature Reserve in Canberra. I then got to stroke one at Healesville sanctuary in Melbourne - they don't feel sharp and prickly but furry with smooth spikes. They are one of only two egg-laying mammals (the other being the platypus)
This little guy was sculpted in wax then casuarina needles added as his spikes. The lost wax casting technique means the vegetation is burnt out and replaced with metal. Note his back leg seems to be backwards but they are actually made this way.
