Growing up at Eden on the south coast, I would watch the humpback whales migrate each year. They were hunted almost to extinction but after become protected in 1966, their numbers started increasing.
In 2008 their conservation status was reclassified from vulnerable to least concern and these majestic mammals can be seen in increasing numbers off the south-east coast of Australia.
